The tradition of throwing confetti over the bride and groom comes from Italy. Before paper confetti, there were flowers, petals, grain or rice thrown at the happy couple, to bestow prosperity and fertility. These days confetti comes in all shapes and sizes, colours and textures, and you can still buy natural petals, which remain the most popular type, and certainly the most Vicar- and venue-friendly! Many modern brides make confetti their DIY wedding project by drying their favourite flower petals before the wedding.

 West Usk lighthouse wedding

What a lovely idea for two sailors to get married at West Usk lighthouse, With a strong nautical theme it was the perfect backdrop for their big day. The west Usk lighthouse is now run by a husband and wife team who attended to the guests needs all day with no fuss and a smile.

The lighthouse was the first to be built by renowned Scottish civil engineer James Walker in 1821. Amongst other projects, Walker went on to build another 21 lighthouses. The land around the lighthouse has been reclaimed as farmland but it stood on an island until 1856. It was decommissioned as an operational lighthouse in 1922.

The Lighthouse is available to hold Civil Ceremonies. Which is  held downstairs in the large Dining Room, This has a sea view as well as landward view, with seating for 20 guests. You can also have the ceremony in the slate bedded Entrance Hall for 10 people, with the spiral staircase as a backdrop.  As we are a B&B, the Lighthouse will be entirely at your disposal for 4 hours on the day, preferably between 12pm-4pm. You can bring your own refreshments for afterwards. You will have access to the lantern Room, the Roof Garden, the Wedding Room, and the Garden where you can continue with your celebration afterwards if you wish.

West Usk lighthouse wedding

With full use of the lighthouse it was something new for us at Dave Packer Photography, and so a quick recce to find the best light and that was all we needed before we captured the day in our usual informal style of documentry photography. The day came to a close with the kids relaxing the hot tube and the bride and groom providing everyone with an evening fire works display

A private road off the B4239 (Lighthouse Road) leads to the lighthouse. Alternatively, it may be reached by a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) walk along the sea wall footpath from the car park of the Lighthouse Inn on Beach Road. The lighthouse is situated next to the Pont-y-cwcw Reen. Give me  shout out if you want more information about our wedding prices

St Fagans Wedding

Having your wedding at St Fagans wedding venue is a good choice if you want to be surrounded by stunning well kept wall gardens, lakes, fountains and rose lined paths. A medieval castle dating from the 13th century. St Fagans Castle became a Grade I listed building in 1977 previously existed on the site, and a new house was built on the site by Nicholas Herbert, who bought the site from Gibbon in 1586. Part of the D-shaped medieval boundary fortifications remain, forming a wall around the current house.

Wedding Venue St Fagans Castle

I have photographed a few weddings at St Fagans and each time its been a nice cosy affair with 20-30 guests with both rooms providing stunning window light to shoot the wedding ceremony and guests, and with my camera on silent mode no one hears me snapping away during the service. There are plenty of rooms and walled gardens to provide cover too, if the dreaded rain comes in on the your big day. The bride can make a grand entrance in her wedding car along the tree lined route from the St fagans village end and always provides a great photo for the memories. The Wedding cars always stay behind after the wedding service and we position the bride and groom on the same path with St Fagans wedding venue behind them. The tourist are kept away from the main house area for the wedding so the guests can have private use to relax and enjoy the wedding day.

Met at the famous lighthouse Roath Park for a quick shoot with Emma and her lovely family.  Lots of leaves to throw around, and a good time was had by all.  The land for Roath Park was donated to the city in 1887, primarily by the Marquis of Bute.  The Park was officially opened to the public in 1894.  Work initially focused on creating the lake from an area of marshland.  In 1915 a lighthouse was constructed in the lake containing a scale model of the ‘Terra Nova’ ship to commemorate Captain Scott’s ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910.  The Park’s atmosphere today still retains the Victorian elegance and its status as a Conservation Area ensures these qualities will be conserved. XDave  Say Hi on Facebook

Autumn family photo shoot in Cardiff, I photographed Becky and Martin’s wedding a few years ago, and my wife taught Becky to Ski when she was only 4 years old. (Wifey is feeling old now) So it’s been great to keep in touch over the years and we had a great laugh chatting about skiing and all the characters from the ski centre. Llandaff fields provided us with a stunning carpet of fallen leaves for Toby to kick around whilst I snapped away with my super fast Sony 55mm 1.8. Becky brought the family waterproof picnic blanket for the photos, so they would be nice and comfortable holding their latest addition to the family, young Molly.  I have been spending a few hours this evening editing the lovely colours to get an even match before they go off to the printers for Xmas presents. Rosedew Farm Wedding is a fine venue to choose for your big day. With the Great Barn providing an ideal room for the ceremony and party. So it was hay bales out and Dear Florence prividing the rustic charm, chic and finishing touches.

The new Mr and Mrs Dite put on a great afternoon for their guests which included a 60s singer and Space Hoppers (What’s not to like). Pre wedding breakfast nibbles was in the shape of little cones of fish and chips washed down with Champers and beer. The staff and front of house at Rosedew were on hand to make the day go smoothly and all the guests found their seats on time although some insisted on bringing their space Hoppers!

The bearded Taco man provided alcoholic ice lollies of  various flavours and taste which went down a hit, They trade from a uniquely converted ford transit van named Contessa, who spent most of her previous life as a police riot wagon. All the ingredients are  sourced locally wherever possible check them out on facebook for more information.

With only a couple of requested formal shots from the lovely Mrs Dite, Mandy and I were able to spend most of our time with the telephoto lens attached to the cameras, observing, waiting and then CLICK getting the shot. We love shooting weddings at the great Barn as there is nearly 360 degrees availablity around the Barn for photos which is important for us humble wedding photographers looking for the best light to shoot and make the photos punch.

Dear Florence provide the inhouse decoration hire at Rosedew farm, they hire out the wedding or party decorations you want for a fraction of the price of buying and a whole lot less effort! Hiring is really simple to organise.

Want can I say about the evening show / band. Big Macs Wholly Soul band were the head line act and boy did they rock the Great Barn out, EVERYBODY was dancing to the classics. Thanks for including me in your big day guys XDave

Hodgkin lymphoma – Ellie’s Story

In early 2011, Ellie Philpotts was diagnosed with stage 2B Hodgkin lymphoma. Here, she’s penned down her thoughts and feelings about being diagnosed when she was 15 years old and how her life differed from that of a regular teenager during that time.

Lukaemia Care contacted me to see i could spare a few hours and  photograph a very special lady. So the deed was put in motion and i Spent a lovely sunday afternoon chatting about her cancer, taking photos for the charity and drinking posh coffee! Ellie is now on her way to getting a degree in journalism here in Cardiff and uses her experience as a patient to help and write about the support in place with her unique perspective……. Xpax

Here, she’s penned down her thoughts and feelings about being diagnosed when she was 15 years old and how her life differed from that of a regular teenager during that time.

“Hodgkin lymphoma can easily masquerade as other, less serious illnesses. Its symptoms can be confused with other, more normal teenage issues like mild fatigue. For months I experienced this, as well as swollen glands and weirdly, itchy hands and feet. I put this extra tiredness down to being a typical student, as I was revising for my GCSEs whilst trying to keep up other areas of life like socialising and planning what I wanted to do once I’d finished school. After a while I began to blame my symptoms on a winter virus or cold.

ellie-philpotts-11After a while though, my symptoms got worse. I noticed a lump in my neck, I woke up drenched in sweat every morning and I felt breathless – even on the shortest of walks. It was then that I started to think my problems weren’t normal after all – although I never ever thought I had a blood cancer.

After a few repeat visits to my doctors – lymphoma is tricky to diagnose because the symptoms are so vague and it is relatively rare – I was eventually referred to my local hospital. After a couple of days there, I was then transferred to Birmingham Children’s hospital. After a week of scans, I was diagnosed with stage 2B Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma - Ellie's StoryWhen I was eventually diagnosed, I actually felt relieved. Although finding out that I had a blood cancer was a huge shock, I felt I could then focus on starting to get better. After being diagnosed on the Friday night, I started my chemotherapy the next Monday, so I didn’t have much time to worry about my diagnosis or what was going to happen next. In hindsight, maybe that was a good thing!

Hodgkin lymphoma - Ellie's StoryDespite having stayed in a teenagers ward at Birmingham, I was actually treated on an outpatient unit with younger children. Here, I received chemo via a Hickman Line, alongside oral chemotherapy drugs and steroids. After receiving my treatment I had another scan that thankfully showed that I was no longer showing signs of active lymphoma so didn’t need radiotherapy. I think I was relatively lucky in terms of treatment but I did have the usual side-effects such as neutropenia, nausea, lowered immunity and hair loss (which were sometimes difficult to cope with especially being a teenager).               Hodgkin lymphoma – Ellie’s StoryHodgkin lymphoma - Ellie's Story“Birmingham Children’s Hospital has an excellent Teenage Cancer Trust centre and staying there made me feel like I wasn’t such an isolated case – being a 15-year-old confronted with cancer. I was lucky as I managed to avoid any infections whilst having chemo, and still went to school when I could. I was in Year 10, so I was determined to not fall behind with my GCSEs and this gave me focus throughout my treatment.

“It goes without saying that cancer has an impact on you emotionally. You’re hurled into unknown territory. You experience feelings of fear and anxiety which are only natural when coping with such a scary diagnosis. Your routine is disrupted; you have to prioritise hospital over school; you feel like you’ve lost control over your future; and your physical appearance changes. I guess your normal teenage life becomes unrecognisable. But it is important to stay as positive as possible and know that support is there for you, if you need it.

Hodgkin lymphoma - Ellie's Story“I have been in remission since May 2011 and I appreciate how fortunate I am. In fact, this year marked my official all-clear, no signs of the lymphoma five years after my treatment. But blood cancer is still a big part of my life. It’s opened my eyes to the world around me and motivated me to help others more recently diagnosed. This is why I’m now passionate about promoting lymphoma symptoms to young people, because the quicker teenagers who have lymphoma are diagnosed, the quicker they can be treated and carry on with their normal lives.”
